formicobio technology is based on the use of a novel sulphur-free biosolvent, which enables the biosolvent and water circulation within the process to be fully closed, preventing the generation of waste. In formicofib technology selective delignification is based on the use of a novel sulphur-free biosolvent that can be fully recovered by evaporation, without the problems typically associated with the silicates present in non-wood raw materials or solubility limitations of cooking liquors. Following recovery, the biosolvent can be fully re-used in the process, while the dissolved lignin is used in energy generation. As both biosolvent and process water are fully recovered, no waste or effluent are generated. Together with the low level of chemical input needed and the fact that the biorefinery is self-sufficient in terms of energy, formicofib offers excellent cost-effectiveness combined with high sustainability.
