Chempolis to build a 3rd generation biorefining research and demonstration plant in Oulu, Finland.

Chempolis strongly expands its operations in developing environmentally friendly solutions for biorefining technologies. Chempolis Biorefining Park, CBP, will be the first plant in the world based on third generation biorefining technology.

Chempolis recently acquired the former medical plant from Orion Corporation. The new premises include in total 14 000 m² of which 8 000 m² is reserved for R&D center and demonstration plant. The rest will be occupied by project management and administration, and for future expansion. Chempolis strongly invests in developing biorefining technologies, including over 10 million euros investment in the new demonstration plant. Chempolis had 4 million euros turnover in 2007.

Since 1995 Chempolis has been a forerunner in developing novel environmental and energy efficient biorefining technologies. These technologies utilise agro residues and other non-wood and non-food feedstocks, such as straw and reed as raw materials for production of biofuels, paper fibres and biochemicals. Non-wood and non-food materials include a number of cultivated and naturally growing plants such as agricultural residues, and they are available in abundance all over the world.

Chempolis has patented the formico® - product family of biorefining technologies. Low water consumption, low greenhouse gas emissions and minimization of other environmental impacts of industrial production are the main environmental benefits of these new technologies. They do not employ sulphur nor chlorine chemicals. These technologies offer a solution to tackle the environmental obstacles created by fast population growth and increased consumption, which includes deforestation, global warming as well as water and air pollution.

Third generation biorefining technologies developed by Chempolis enable co-generation of such a products, which are environmentally and economically more sustainable than the current first generation biorefining processes or even the second generation technologies that are under development.
