Successful production test runs of Non-Wood papermaking fibres completed

Chempolis has completed the first non-wood pulp production test runs at the Chempolis biorefinery in Oulu, Finland. The production of papermaking fibres is based on the use of wheat straw and the trials took place after the commissioning of biorefinery.

Delignification of biomass and production of papermaking fibres is based on the Chempolis´s proprietary formicofib™ biorefining technology. The technology selectively fractionates biomass, while the process chemicals are recovered and recycled. The formicofibTM process bleaches fibres using a Totally Chlorine Free technology, which enables the full recovery and reuse of water within the biorefinery.

“The production of papermaking fibres in our biorefinery is a natural step forward on the path leading to commercial-scale production based on formico® technologies. We can now start customer trials and verify the production of different pulps from various Non-Wood biomasses on an industrial scale as well as obtain detailed data for the engineering of large industrial biorefineries,” says Chempolis President and CEO Esa Rousu.

formicofib™ enables the co-production of papermaking fibres and biochemicals from lignocellulosic biomass using own bioenergy; it represents thus a low-carbon technology and a true third-generation biorefining technology. formicofib™ avoids the main problems associated with other technologies providing an opportunity for highly profitable and sustainable biorefining.
