Successful Non-Wood papermaking production test runs completed

Chempolis has completed a series of Non-Wood-based papermaking production trials with UPM Kymmene Plc. Non-wood papermaking fibres were produced from wheat straw at the Chempolis biorefinery in Oulu, Finland. All papermaking trials were successful – even when performed at world-record speed in modern paper machines.

The production of papermaking fibres was based on Chempolis’s proprietary formicofib™ biorefining technology, which selectively fractionates Non-Wood biomass while recovering and recycling process chemicals and water.

“The successful production of high-quality non-wood-based paper with up to a 70% proportion of non-wood fibres is very encouraging. Both runnability and quality were verified to be excellent. This represents a big step in saving of forests and wood fibre content of paper,” says Chempolis President and CEO Esa Rousu.

formicofib™ enables the co-production of papermaking fibres and biochemicals from lignocellulosic biomass using own bioenergy; it represents thus a low-carbon technology and a true third-generation biorefining technology. formicofib™ avoids the main problems associated with other technologies providing an opportunity for highly profitable and sustainable biorefining.
